Gentle
herbs such as aloe vera can be used to help the body heal from various
ailments.
The aloe
vera plant is one of the most recognized and widely used herbs in
the world. Cultures across the globe have used it both medicinally
and cosmetically for 3,500 years and today it's healing benefits are
well documented and officially recognized.
Two thousand
years ago, the Greek physician Dioscorides wrote that aloe vera was
"an effective treatment for everything from constipation to burns
to kidney ailments". Cleopatra regarded the gel as a fountain
of youth and used it to preserve her skin against the ravages of the
Egyptian sun.
An article
in the Journal of Dermatological Surgery and Oncology suggests that
aloe vera significantly speeds the healing process of patients who
undergo facial dermabrasion- the removal of top layers of skin to
remove scars.
The plant
produces a juice with a gel like consistency that makes it easy to
apply to abrasions, burns, cold sores, blisters, bug bites and other
skin irritations.
I use
it to apply to red and inflamed dog's ears while they are being treated
on a deeper level with homeopathy.
The plant
grows wild in warm areas , but it can also be grown easily indoors
as a house plant. Plants that are three years old or older are said
to produce the most healing juice.
For skin
problems, apply the gel liberally.
Internally,
take 1-3 capsules per day. Aloe vera should not be taken internally
by women or animals who are pregnant, by children or the elderly.
